America is supposed to be the land of the free, the place where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are available to everyone regardless of race, creed, or social status. The sad truth about our nation, however, is that it has been the land of the free for some and not others. The black community, in particular, has suffered as a result of centuries-old racism, and our nation still feels the scars from our battles over equality. Malcolm X was a man who felt uniquely called to expose the ills and contradictions of an American society that putatively lived by the principles of justice, and his path to exposing the truth about regnant injustice made him one of the most powerful voices ever to have taken up the cause of equality. Malcolm shocked and scared both blacks and whites, but they could not help but listen to him because he spoke with fiery conviction. He contributed to the civil rights movement and helped to overcome racism by advocating separatist black practices, by ex posing the falsehood of whites in the American society of his time, and by imbuing in blacks a sense of personhood they never knew they had. Before delving into what made Malcolm X such an effective and controversial leader, it is important to spend some time on where he came from.
